I made my first saddle in 1991 and commenced business (Dan Baker Custom Saddles) in 1992. At the time I was a stockman in the Gulf of Carpentaria, North Queensland. I worked on such cattle stallions as Kamileroi, Coolullah, Mt Roseby, and Hillside. After five years in the Gulf I moved to Karalee near Brisbane where I began full time saddle making. My wife and I and two children have now settled at Stanwell near Rockhampton QLD.
We live on 160 acres where we breed a few horses and I train my own cutters. I have competed in the NCHA Non Pro Futurity, Derby and Classics as well as regular weekend shows. I also compete in Challenges and Campdrafts. This has helped me immensely in the designing of my saddles. As I use them every day I have found first hand what works and what doesn’t. My saddle making philosophies came from doing big days in the saddle, I never liked getting a sore bum and I don’t like hurting a horses back. I am the sort of person that will save up a bit of extra money and buy the best quality item with the thought that I will have it for a long time and be proud of my purchase. These are the things that drive in my quest to make the best saddles I can.
We custom make saddles. This means from the trees to the finished product you have choices. Such renowned horsemen as Ian Francis, Ken May, Cameron Parker and Corey Holden have exercised their choice and ride in Dan Baker Custom Made Saddles. Our saddles are made from the finest quality, hand picked Herman Oak and Wickett and Craig Leather. Trees we use are rawhide covered pine or my own made and designed fibreglass moulded trees superbly hand made to my exact orders. We use only the best hardware available. We custom hand make each saddle to your individual needs, giving you the choice.
Exercise your choice and have Dan Baker Custom make your next saddle.
